Building Inclusive
Communities
Where Every
Person Belongs

Our work is rooted in one core belief: a stronger community is one where every person is seen, valued, supported, and included.

For decades, the narrative surrounding individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) was one of isolation. While progress has been made toward community integration across the Greater Kansas City area, a critical gap remains between merely existing in a community and truly being of it.

Para-Ability’s Empowerment for Community Inclusion Program (ECIP) is designed to close this gap. By utilizing a sophisticated, person-centered approach, ECIP operates on a dual-benefit model: it simultaneously empowers individuals with IDD to actively engage in community life and inspires the broader community to foster an environment of genuine acceptance and support.

A Practical Pathway from Isolation to Independence

Empowering Individuals: From Outings to True Belonging

ECIP moves beyond the traditional model of superficial community outings, focusing instead on sustainable, multidimensional engagement tailored to each participant’s unique goals and preferences.

Self-Determination & Choice: At the core of the program is individual autonomy. Participants decide their own level of involvement, building the confidence and independence necessary for long-term life satisfaction.

Diverse Pathways for Growth: The program actively connects participants to recreational, spiritual, and civic spaces—including local YMCAs, community centers, and places of worship across Johnson, Wyandotte, and the greater Kansas City counties.

Contribution & Employment: By facilitating meaningful volunteer opportunities—such as park clean-ups and neighborhood tree-planting projects—alongside structured pathways to employment, ECIP helps individuals view themselves—and be viewed—as active, contributing citizens.

Inspiring the Community: Building Ecosystems of Support
True inclusion cannot happen in a vacuum; it requires an engaged and empathetic community. ECIP serves as a catalyst for local transformation by dismantling stigma and building natural, unpaid support networks.

Bridging Social Divides: The program intentionally connects participants with local business owners, faith leaders, law enforcement officers, and neighbors. These interactions humanize the IDD experience, fostering mutual understanding and breaking down long-standing social barriers.

Cultivating Natural Supports: By encouraging these organic relationships, ECIP inspires community members to move from passive bystanders to active allies, creating a sustainable network of support that extends far beyond the scope of formal social services.

Enriching the Civic Fabric: When local organizations and citizens learn how to effectively welcome and support individuals with IDD, the entire community benefits from a more diverse, vibrant, and cohesive civic culture.
